FAQs

About the Designs

Am I purchasing a complete piece of furniture?

No — you’re purchasing a design intent drawing. Our role is to give you a clear, customisable blueprint that communicates how a piece should be built. This keeps costs down, gives you creative flexibility, and allows your chosen maker to craft the final item to the exact specifications of your space.

What is a design intent drawing?

A design intent drawing is a clear, scaled plan that communicates the look, proportions, and intended construction of a piece. It provides your joiner or carpenter with the essential information they need to build the item to specification.

How detailed are the drawings?

Our drawings balance precision with practicality — detailed enough to guide your maker, while leaving scope for their craft and expertise in construction.

Can the drawings be adapted to my space or dimensions?

Yes. Our drawings are designed to be tailored specifically to your space, ensuring the finished piece fits seamlessly into your home.

Do you offer different styles or finishes within the designs?

Finishes are not included within the drawings themselves, but we offer a bespoke service if you’d like us to refine a design further or incorporate a particular style detail.

Working with Makers

Do you recommend joiners or carpenters?

Yes. Checkout our trusted makers and suppliers here, or you’re welcome to use your own.

Can I use my own joiner or carpenter?

Absolutely. The drawings are made to be shared with any skilled professional of your choice.

How do I share the drawings with my maker?

You’ll receive digital files that can be easily emailed or printed. Your maker can work directly from these documents.

What if my maker has questions about the design?

They’re welcome to contact us if any clarification is needed.

The Process

How does the ordering process work?

Simply select your chosen design, add it to your cart, and complete checkout. Your drawings will then be prepared and delivered digitally.

What do I receive when I purchase a drawing?

You’ll receive a set of digital design intent drawings, ready to share with your maker. These include the essential dimensions and construction notes.

Do you provide guidance on materials or finishes?

Keep an eye on our blog for general inspiration and guidance. For more detailed recommendations, such as specific materials or finish options, we offer a bespoke service. Contact us directly if you are interested here.

How long does it take to go from drawing to finished piece?

Timelines vary depending on your maker’s schedule and the complexity of the piece, but most projects move from drawing to installation within a few weeks to a couple of months.

Practicalities

Are the drawings suitable for both fitted and freestanding pieces?

Yes. Our designs can be adapted to work as either fitted joinery or freestanding furniture, depending on your needs.

Can I use the drawings outside the UK?

Yes. The drawings are provided digitally and can be used by makers anywhere in the world.

What file formats will I receive?

Drawings are supplied in common digital formats (PDF for easy sharing, and CAD files where appropriate) so your maker can work with them directly.

Do you provide installation guidance?

We don’t provide installation instructions as this is usually part of your maker’s role. For specific requirements, we recommend discussing directly with them — or using our bespoke service for tailored support.

Costs & Ownership

What’s included in the price of a drawing?

The purchase includes the full set of digital drawings and rights to use them with your chosen maker for one build.

Are there any additional costs I should expect from my maker?

Yes — your maker will charge separately for materials, labour, and installation. We recommend requesting a quote in advance so you have a clear picture of the total cost.

Do I own the design once I purchase it?

You own the right to use the drawing to create your piece. The copyright of the design remains with Made For.

Can I use the same drawing for multiple pieces?

No. Each drawing is licensed for a single build. If you’d like to use the same design again, please purchase an additional drawing licence.
